1973-1979 Honda Civic

“It’ll get you where you’re going”

Launched in 1973 when the world was struck by the oil crisis. It was a great chance for Honda to get mainstream while the G.M. and Ford couldn’t find a place in the market with their Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto.

Equipped with a transverse mounted 1.1 liter four cylinder engine producing about 50 bhp, it was the perfect car for the general public at that time. Even better, it liked to rev, and the four-speed manual was already hinting at the greatness of Honda shifters to come.

1967-1997 Toyota Century

The production started in 1967 and continued up to 2016 with a redesign in 1997. Using an FR layout with a 3.0 L 3V V8 from 1967-1973 and a 3.4 L 4V-U V8 from 1973-1983, Century has remained the flagship model by Toyota.

The first generation Century remained largely untouched during its impressively long 30-year production run, apart from minor cosmetic changes and engine upgrades. The Century was produced in limited numbers and was built in a “nearly hand-made” fashion.

Being launched in 1970, the liftback wasn’t available until 1973. Models for the Japanese market liftback were the 1600 ST, 1600 GT (TA27), 2000 ST, and 2000 GT (RA25 and RA28). The American liftback was only offered as GT (RA29) with a 2.2-liter 20R engine for the 1976 and 1977 model year.

1969 – 1972 Nissan Skyline GT-R

It was equipped with the 2.0 L DOHC S20 I6 producing 160 bhp (120 kW) at 7000 rpm and 177 N⋅m (131 ft⋅lb) of torque at 5600 rpm. Power was delivered to the rear wheels by a 5-speed manual transmission. The first Skyline GT-R rode on a semi-trailing arm strut suspension. It was available as a coupe in March 1971 with the chassis code KPGC10.

The Japanese Fairlady Z featured a 2.0L SOHC L20A inline-6 producing 130 hp (97 kW), while the US 240Z featured a 2.4L L24 inline-6 with twin Hitachi SU-type carburetors that produced 151 hp (113 kW) (SAE gross horsepower). A third Z, the Z432 (PS30) shared a performance version of the DOHC 2.0 L S20 engine with the Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R.

This forgotten sports car by Honda featured a 791 cc straight-4 engine producing 70 bhp (52 kW) at 8000 rpm. And believe me, She was the world’s fastest car! Ok, there were other fast cars at that time but S600 was still the fastest car powered by a 1 liter engine and also Honda’s first car to reach 160 km/h.

Early examples continued to use the chain drive and independent suspension in the rear. 752 roadsters and 242 coupés were then produced. After that Honda switched to a conventional drive-shaft, live axle rear end with four radius rods and a Panhard rod.[2] 604 roadsters and 69 coupes were built with this setup before disc brakes replaced the front drums.

1967-1970 Toyota 2000GT

Designed by Toyota in collaboration to Yamaha, the 2000GT is Toyota’s first supercar. This fastback sports car had an FMR layout and had two engine options- 2.0 L 3M I6 150hp 2.3 L 2M I6 109-115hp. It featured a 5 speed manual and a 3 speed automatic gearbox.

Its smoothly flowing bodywork was executed in aluminium and featured pop-up headlights above large plexiglass covered driving lamps flanking the grille similar to those on the Toyota Sports 800. Bumpers were minimal, and the car was extremely low, just 116 cm (45.7 in) to the highest point of the roof. Despite a custom open-top version built for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, a factory-produced convertible was never offered.
