GREAT NEWS! Fiat has confirmed the new Punto!

It’s official! Fiat is now developing a new Punto!

The 1st generation of the Punto, designed by Giorgietto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, debuted in 1993 and was a huge success for the Turin-based company, with over 3,400,000 units sold across all of Europe. A sportier GT model, fitted with a turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-4 engine, was also offered, and is still very popular to this day. Oh, and an uber-cool Cabrio model was also made.

The 2nd gen Punto was launched in 1999 and was produced until 2010. It was the first car of its class to receive a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating and over 3,100,000 units were sold during its life.

In 2005 Fiat lauched the 3rd gen Punto, also known as “Grande Punto”, which was sold alongside the smaller 2nd gen. Punto until the latter went out of production in 2010.
Like the 1st gen, the Grande Punto was designed by Giugiaro. The platform was developed in collaboration with Opel, who also used it on the Corsa D. A sportier Abarth version was also produced between 2007 and 2010. The Grande Punto was renamed “Punto Evo” in 2010 and, in 2012, it was once again renamed; this time, it was simply known as “Punto”. This car first received an impressive 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2006, though a later test in 2017 ended with a 0-star result, simply due to the car not being fitted with modern safety assists. The 3rd gen. Punto went out of production in 2018, but was sadly not replaced by any other model, leaving a big gap between the smaller 500 and Panda and the larger Tipo.

But things are about to change!

A few days ago, Fiat CEO Olivier François confirmed that Fiat is now developing the long-awaited 4th gen Punto!
Thanks to the recent merging of FCA and PSA, the new Punto will be based on PSA’s CMP platform, which is already used by the Peugeot 208 and the Opel Corsa F.
The launch of the new Mk4 Punto is expected to take place between late 2021 and 2022.
