Why Playing the Test Drive Unlimited and Test Drive Unlimited 2 Is Such A Pain in the Ass? #Blogpost

The Test Drive Unlimited series is such a heaven for those who are obsessed with the “living the dream”-ish thing. Yes, you can buy mansions, fancy cars, interact with others, just like what most rich petrolheads can do. But somehow, the game itself is not perfect, since there are a lot of essential flaws inside.

Test Drive Unlimited

This game was launched in 2006, and features bunches of cars. The graphic is very nice for a 2006 games, and it’s quite pristine. There are numerous houses to buy, and my favorite part is the upgrade part. I can even upgrade a Ford Mustang GT into a Saleen S281 Extreme, which is very nice for a Mustang maniac like me. But it’s just too bad that the physics is just so damn rubbish. I haven’t try the game in another console beside PC, but to play it with keyboard is so tiring. Cutting a chicane with Maserati MC12 in 150kph is identically simillar with going around the Monaco with the bonker Hellcat. It’s a pure combination between understeer and oversteer. And once you hit a road barrier or the sidewall in the highway, it’s better for you to simply hit quit the game. Even cars like Ferrari Enzo or the Murcielago is something that is uncontrollable in the game, even the tiny VW Golf is so hard to control in the game. You can’t finish a race without going off the track for once or twice. Oh dear, I really want to curse a lot about the physics in the game, like, darn I really hate on how the cars handle. Even there is a hardcore mode if you managed to finish the game. I tried it also, and you can only succeed if you are a Saint.

The cars are quite complete, but too bad there is no BMW in the game. I really want to drive the E46, or the Z8 in the game. There isn’t any Mitsubishi too, an Evo would be lovely. I really want to know whether the Evo will drive like a crazy drunken yob or not.

Test Drive Unlimited 2

One thing about my writing process is, I can’t even access my photos in this game. Meaning, I can’t put my photos about the game in this site, which is annoying. Thanks to Google about the photo.

Too bad that the cars are fewer than the old version. I mean, it’s a 2011 game, and all of sudden no Lamborghinis in the game? No Maserati too? Bloody Nora, it annoys me as heck. There are no any additional manufacturers since the old game, and now Atari even reduced the number of manufacturers in the game. (Although there are Hummer and Land Rover, but still, Atari cut the best)

The handling, hard to admit, is slightly better, even though if you drive certain cars like Aston Martin, CLK 63 AMG, and the Alfa 8C, they handle like hell. There is one event in the Aspahlt Racing School, that is such a butthurt. You have to drive the CLK 63 AMG, in the mountain road, and it’s wet. Combined with the bloody poor physics from the game, that is when I have the motivation to make this blogpost. Every turn is just like a hairpin, and the car is just like an old Yenko with a huge blower up front and solid rear suspension. Even with the Alfa 8C, you will simply slide in a chicane.

And too bad, it’s no use to turn the driving assistance into full assistance, it has no effect at all. I have countless races where I suck at driving an Aston Martin, but succeed with Audi RS6 Avant. Bug? Nope. S*&ty physics? Heck yeah.

And, to be honest, the negative side of the games are quite okay with the features in the game. I can even do a plastic surgery in the game, edit my furnitures in my house, collecting car wrecks, and even help a hopeless guy to follow his cheating girlfriend!! Darn, the gameplay is amazing.

Even though those games have awful physics, but still they are my guilty pleasure, I love both games. And those games piss me off too.

BUT, it doesn’t mean that I hate those games. I love both, it’s like my guilty pleasure to play both. It’s good for my alter ego, to be able to live wealth and buy cars, it makes me calm because of the scenery and the car wash, and I spent my university times just to play those games. I wish that I am that abundant enough to purchase a Logitech G29, and play those games again.

I was always in a love-hate relationship with TDU 2. It had so many brilliant Ideas that were not properly thought-through or finished. It really is a shame. The part with the aston and RS6 you mention, I know that feeling. I used to drive AWD vehicles mostly, because high power RWD vehicles were just uncontrollable. And that comes from a guy wo adores RWD.
