The Most Unusual Car Door Designs - Part 4 #blogpost
Final part of the series! Enjoy!
Bond Bug
The Bond Bug is a small British two-seat, three-wheeled automobile which was built from 1970 to 1974. It is a wedge-shaped microcar, with a lift-up canopy and side screens instead of conventional doors.
Toyota Sera
The Sera was built between 1990 and 1996 and is most notable for its butterfly doors which tilt up and forward when opened, and the canopy constructed largely of glass panels.
Zündapp Janus
The Janus was the only car ever made by German company Zündapp. It was produced between 1957 and 1958. It has doors in the front and rear and the passengers sit back to back - which made it quite difficult to see what was front and what was rear. It became famous in the movie CARS 2 as ‘Professor Z’.
AMC Pacer
The AMC Pacer is a two-door compact car produced by the American Motors Corporation from 1975 to 1979. It has asymmetrical doors, with the passenger door being 4 inches longer than the driver door. It also became famous in the CARS 2 movie.
Dodge Deora
The Deora is a 1965 Dodge A100 pickup truck that was heavily customized by Mike and Larry Alexander in Detroit for the 1967 Detroit Autorama. Entry into the gold-painted custom is achieved by lifting up the windshield, swivelling the lower gate and entering through the front.
Holden Hurricane
The Hurricane was a two-seat concept car built by Holden in 1969. It did not feature conventional doors; instead, a hydraulically powered canopy swung forwards over the front wheels and the seats rose up and titled forward.
Kaiser Darrin
The Kaiser Darrin was an American sports car built in 1954. It was equipped with a fiberglass body and doors that slid on tracks into the front fender wells. Only 435 cars and 6 prototypes were built.
Toyota FJ Cruiser
The FJ Cruiser is a retro style, mid-size SUV with styling and off road performance reminiscent of the original FJ40 Land Cruiser. It features rear opening access doors, but they look like they’re about to fall off when opened as they are slightly angled.
Saleen S7
The Saleen S7 is an American hand-built, high-performance supercar. It is entirely made from carbon fibre, and features doors with another hinge on the roof.
Renault Twizy
I could have included any kind of military Jeep instead, as they also have no doors. But on the Twizy they at least come as an option, and Renault tuner Elia offers aftermarket windows, so you can turn this into a daily driver. Even more spectacular is the F1 version with 73kW and no doors.
W Motors Lykan Hypersport
The Lykan Hypersport is a limited production hypercar by W Motors, a United Arab Emirates based company, founded in 2012 in Lebanon. The doors have their hinges on the rear and open upwards.
Jeremy P45
The P45 is a vehicle designed, built and tested by Jeremy Clarkson and was featured in Top Gear Season 19 Episode 1. The P45 was designed to be smaller than the Peel P50, the world’s smallest car. It has the engine and the running gear from a quadbike. The body panels swing away for easy entry, and the windscreen and roof are manually folded over the drivers head. It comes with optional extras like the ‘Delux-Wash-Wipe’-Option for just 1.99 or a satellite navigation system for 500 pounds.
That’s it for this Programm and indeed this series! But we’ll see you soon for more Stiggyness on Car Throttle! ^^
