Are People Forgetting What JDM Culture Trully Was?

Oh, men, I love when I see a JDM guy hating on a new NSX. For some reason, JDM guys have become conservative. But not what they were 10 years ago, or 20 years ago. Hell JDM guys always loved technology. For example, let’s take their 3 most beloved cars: Toyota Supra IV TT, Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, and Honda NSX. Even today those cars quite a lot of hype.

Back in the day, these two cars came out, they were technologically advanced. To show you I’ll start with the NSX.

Honda NSX - Next Sportcar eXperimental

Most people think NSX was old fashioned. But that’s wrong. The first generation started production in 1990. So it’s a 27-year-old car. But the car was in production for 15 years. So the latest model (of that generation) is 12 years old. Sure the car received some basic changes (It was Redesigned and has some tweaks) but the base of the car was always the same. However, there’s a good reason why it wasn’t outdated until the ending of production, hell even after that NSX was still an advanced car. It had an N/A engine, not because it was conservative, but because didn’t need a turbo, it had VTEC. In 1997 it got a 3.2 V6, and that’s it. It was a sports car that could compete with supercars. It had some serious weight savings, it had a different kind of stitching, just to save 5 grams. It didn’t have a leather gear stick. It had an incredible chassis.

And the new, second generation NSX isn’t much different. Sure now it’s a Supercar. But it still competes with cars that are a class above. It competes with Hypercars. Sure it can’t compete in performance. But it can in technological advancement. NSX’s AWD system is the best out there. It can torque vector both petrol and electrical energy. NSXs AWD system is better than 918s, Aventador SVs, Huracan Performantes… So as we can conclude, IT IS IDENTICAL TO ITS PREDECESSOR (In terms of technological advancement)

Nissan GT-R

Nissan GT-R, another icon, is also a technologically advanced car. Let’s start with the legendary R32 and equally legendary R34. They are also old, but still highly advanced. Most people call their successor “a PC”. But they forget that R32 and R34 were also highly advanced. They had ATTESA ETS AWD. And guess what? That AWD system is better than the BMW’s 3 series (e92) XDrive. The RB26DETT (RB - engine code, 2.6liters, D - DOHC, E - petrol, TT - Twin Turbo) was hand built, just like the VR38DETT engine (VR - engine code, 38 - 3,8 liters, D - DOHC, E - petrol, TT - Twin Turbo). For those who don’t know the VR38DETT is the engine from R35. So again, we can conclude, IT IS IDENTICAL TO ITS PREDECESSOR (In terms of technological advancement).

Toyota Supra

Toyota Supra. Yet another car JDM guys love. Now, for example, we will take the IV generation. And because it’s so popular we will take the Supra IV TT. It had a 2JZ-GTE. It was twin-turbocharged, but unlike the GTR it was only RWD. Nevertheless, don’t think it was conservative, no, it had a cockpit designed like a fighter jet, and it had a 6-speed gearbox, wich was highly advanced at that time. New Supra will be exactly the same. Future tech engine (hybrid) and future tech gearbox. IT IS IDENTICAL TO ITS PREDECESSOR (In terms of technological advancement).

That's about cars, now about people

Okay so I think I made my point with cars. (or not yet). But now a little bit about “JDM Guys”

Mid Night - Good Example Of What JDM Guys Used To Be

If you don’t know who Mid Night is, it’s a famous Japanese street racing gang. They used to race on “Wangan” and they would race at speeds higher than 320 km/h (200 m/h).

Let that sink in. They raced at 320 km/h (200 m/h) on a public highway. And they would nail apexes while dodging traffic. Another thing about their cars is that they were more reliable than stock cars.

Again let that sink in. They made fast, unreliable cars, even faster WHILE making them more reliable than any stock car. Also, they would daily drive their cars.

You’re probably asking “How the hell are they doing that?” Well simply, they LOVED future technology. They would modify car parts because they were ahead of the car industry. They were highly intelligent (most of them were doctors and engineers).

Blogpost

Sure you can’t (and never will) be as cool as Mid Night. But you can respect future technology more. Whether you like it or not, Japanese cars were always about technology. And maybe we should respect the future a bit more, and take time to drive the lastest hybrids and EVs.
