1988 Volkswagen Golf mk2 GTI 16V
The project
Three years ago I bought this car and it was a wreck. The paint was damaged, it was full of dents, it missed a lot of parts and the interior smelled like piss.
Since then I cleaned out the interior, put new seats in, completed the dashboard, changed insulation mats, completely repaired the bodywork and resprayed it, restored the brakes, put new shocks in, changed the clutch, changed all the seals on the gearbox, repaired a fuel leak, did a full service with new timing belt, fluids and filters, did a lot of electrical repair/diganosis work, …. I could keep going…
Now after three years it’s finally roadworthy and I can legally drive it.

Awesome machine! I’ve the same one; but without the GTI Badge (and engine). And it sn’t in this state … Good luck for the rest ! ;-)
awesome car, still the best looking golf by far :)
mooi ding man :) vooral die neus met de rallylichtjes ^^
my dream car. hopefully they dont get too expensive in the next few years so I can get one. This car is in my opinion the definition of german quality. sadly todays cars are not build to last :/
If I were you I’d be quick to grab one since they are going up in price. The’ve gone up about 1500€ in value since I bought mine. It’s a general trend with these mk2 Golfs actually, not only with the 16v/GTI/G60 models. Three years ago there were loads of mk2’s for around 500€, now you’ll find a few but the average price for a normal 1300 petrol mk2 is around 1000€.
Cars are 10x better when you’ve put the work in yourself! Thanks for adding it!
Props to you good sir, I’m sure it was well worth the work in the end!
Dikke restauratie ze man!
Merci! Ik kom er morgen mee nr school ;)
