Does puting the car in neutral when it is still runing, for example before the Red Light is good or bad for the Gear box?(more brake wearing for sure)Of course modern cars use less fuel and help with engine braking in gear but what about 20 year-old-cars?

The getting up a steep hill trick doesn’t work well with an 1.0 liter kia picanto haha. then the engine will fall off.

Who rests thier foot on the clutch? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before. That is what the dead pedal is for…

I am guilty of resting my hand on the gear stick, although my arm is also resting on the arm lean, so maybe i’m not using that much force on the gearstick.. It’s a bad habit lol.

Does this mean that you should let off your clutch as fast as possible without damaging the gearbox/engine to minimize clutch wear? (Not meaning letting off instantly)

Cause some people slip the clutch after selecting gear as they’re applying throttle.
I tend to apply throttle after i’ve fully let off the clutch if i’m not accelerating flat out.
So rev match and select gear, let off clutch fast and then apply gas.

Yes you would minimize clutch wear by letting of as soon as possible but in some cars with aggressive clutches and long gears you can’t just wait to apply throttle after releasing the clutch fully because doing so would create a large jolt. In my car, with a Stage 2 clutch and a first gear to 45, it grabs really hard so I have to slip the clutch a bit and let my car get up a bit of speed before fully releasing the clutch because otherwise it jolts really hard. At idle my car rolls at about 10 MPH so if I let go to quickly it jolts the car from the sudden RPM change and bogs the engine down.

Another point I’d like to make is with manual transmissions is that do not take ages to shift between gears. I’ve observed very often that the time between pressing the clutch, changing gear, lift foot off clutch is too slow. This makes the car unstable as the engine is off the throttle and disconnected from the road. I’m not saying shift like a racecar driver, but make it a swift affair of changing gears.

Brilliant video as usual. Hopefully people do notice there habits from it. I used to rest my hand on the gearshift a lot.

How about this:

Sometimes I down shift to slow down with the breaks. I never go above 3000 rpms but after watching this, I’m starting to think I might be wearing the clutch out.

yeah you are, but not by much i usually rev-match when downshifting becomes a habbit

It does wear the clutch every time you shift into a new gear but the argument that many people make is that is makes your brakes last longer cause the engine is doing the work. But conversely it is putting more wear on the engine and on the clutch, and which is cheaper? Brake pads or a clutch and engine components?

But you dont weigh much so you wont grind the shifter
