Just to clarify, not everyone has the funds or automotive knowledge to build their dreamcar car, but does that change anything about the fact that they love cars? I’m asking because lately there has been alot of hate towards people with “lesser” cars and telling people that you’re not a “True” car guy unless you built it yourselves… I’m just wondering what the community think of this…
Someone who enjoys cars and doesn’t see them as machines but as a living thing almost. You could drive a 2000 Impala and still be a car guy. It isn’t about what you drive but about if you love cars and respect other people’s work and effort. You don’t have to build it yourself, but if you are a car guy, then you will always want to improve your car no matter what you drive.
I think there’s a simple answer, or rather, a question to determine whether someone is a true car guy: would you rather have the car or the girl?
A true car person is not someone who only cares about big power, fast cars and building stuff yourself. In my mind a true car person is someone who enjoyes cars big or small, euro, japs or ‘Merican and can still keep a mature conversation no matter what car it’s about and can use actual facts to strenghten their arguments. I find it super anoying when I speak to people who call themselfes a car person while having no clue about what they’re talking about.

True car guys/girls don’t need to own a car. Doesn’t matter if your car is cheap or expensive, a true car guy shares a passion with others about cars. Cars aren’t an item, it’s a living, breathing, entity.
Taking a car and wanting to make it your own, and make it better. And respecting (within reason) the cars others have chosen and what they’ve done with them. And being obsessed with cars in general seems to go with it
You can be a car guy no matter what you drive. You shouldn’t be ashamed of what you drive, you have to accept it and just have fun. We all come from different countries, with different jobs and in some case more or less wealthy parents so not all of us can afford something unique and expensive but you can make any car your own with some personal touches. Some will go for power upgrades, some will go for handling upgrades and some just like their cars to look good and a very few of us will do all three. Just find what makes you happy and do it. I’ve put coilovers, wider tires and better brakes on my underpowered hatch and I have tons of fun on a B road. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made considering my budget.
