I just graduated with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and this is incredibly spot on. I have had to figure out all of my car stuff pretty much on my own because all we learned in school was just math and theory based.

What about technicians? ;)

I think for this video, I am considering that mechanics are techs. To me that is just a word. One is not different from the other. But that is just me.

A technician just replaces stuff and problem solves from a manual.

A mechanic problem solves from knowledge and experience.

A good mechanic can prevent further issues, whereas a technician is just replacing broken parts with whatever the manual says.

That’s why when you take your car to a dealer, you can end up with stuff being replaced that didn’t need explaining.

pff marketing. Try to argue with designer: Yeah, this has to be 20 milimeters up because of pedestrain protection.
But but my design! I want it! Just figure it out. You are an engineer.

@EngineeringExplained, you have really exceeded yourself with this video.
Since becoming a member on CarThrottle I have followed your videos and enjoyed them but this one seems like you made it just for me.

TL;DR: Thankyou very much for what you do as it has helped me out a great deal. This video was just what I needed.

My father is a mechanic (technician) and has been all his life. At 18 I realised that I enjoyed working on cars with him but having done my futher education at school I didn’t want to waste it and decided to go to university to become a mechanical engineer. I have always asked myself whether I made the right choice due to how difficult a mechanical engineering degree can be and how VERY different it is from being a technician.
I am now half way through my second year and watching your videos is one thing that has kept me interested in the degree.
Although it seems so at the beginning, it is not all just sums and equations thank god! Your vids help see the real life application of the theory that is learnt.
This final video between The Humble Mechanic and yourself really struck a chord with me and it has helped me realise that there are pros and cons to both professions and most importantly, that they are not just black or white, but that there is a grey area in between where hands-on can combine with the sometimes obscure theory. I hope to aim for this.
My sincerest thanks, props to you both, and keep up the good work.

Mechanical engineer: designs and makes stuff
Mechanic: fixes the design flaws on the stuff Mechanical engineer does.

In the end, one who gets dirty “KNOWS” what is best for you :P

I obtained a Diploma in Automobile Engg for the very same reason and then took up a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engg soon after. That way, I have more hands on experience of a technician aswell as the efficient brain of an engineer. Unfortunately my country outsources its engineering requirements and unless you graduate from a reputed Engg university, your chances of entering R&D are slim to none. Hence why you see 70% of the country’s engineer work at “Tech support” which is a fancy word for “Call center”

Thank you for this video,it has truly inspired me. My greatest passion is conceiving awesome things but I also really love learning by taking apart any broken mechanism and fixing it. This video has truly motivated me into becoming a mechanical engineer with lots of hands on experience. Thank you
