I was considering buying a 94-98 mustang gt anything I should know about this generations reliability, common problems, maintenance cost, what to look for when buying exct...?
Whatever you do dont get one of the 3.8 V6’s. Well don’t get one with around/over 100k miles the head gaskets WILL go out. Everyone I know and everyone I’ve had has had this issue. Side note, when you repair this it can cost a lot because you HAVE to replace a lot of parts. Otherwise, the V6 has good power and fuel economy. The 4.6’s are a pretty fun, reliable engine. The car alone is pretty smooth and enjoyable. This body style is pretty easy to customize and parts are easy to find. Any other questions? I’ve done plenty of work on these cars lol.
They’re plenty reliable. The same v8 runs out to 200k miles in crown vic taxis. But the sn95 is only 215 horsepower. You’ll have more fun in a 96-98 cobra, or a 99-04 gt. 96-98 cobra is the best bang for your buck.
I’ve beat on my mustang and its holding up fine. But check the oil often, and if it doesn’t have subframe connectors already installed that should be the first thing you do. Maximum motorsports makes great stuff for any budget.
The car will be happy to punk you and leave you in a ditch if you try to drive it like a miata or civic, but after the right suspension work they’ll hang fine with much more expensive/lighter cars.
Check out corral.Net for a lot of great information. Most of those guys are knowledgeable and have pretty good judgement. There’s a huge knowledge base of Mustang owners and that means a lot of used parts too.
I love my car, but I do wish I had a cobra. It could be faster. All in all plenty of fun for the money
