If you are passing through Slovakia, you better be aware of police

As a native Slovak guy I can say our police is pretty special. I admit I don’t have much experience or knowledge about police abroad, but Slovak ones are interesting. I attached few funny situations which happened within a month, of course cause by our policemen which we are really ‘proud’ of.

First is the number of policemen. I found a statistics from 2010 which states Slovakia has around 4,4 cops on 1000 residents (around 21 thousands overall). That’s significant difference compared to UK where it was circa 2,6 of them on 1000 inhabitants of the country in that year. But by the end of the last year overall number even increased by two and a half thousand in Slovakia. The government says the reason is current refugee crisis but homeboys know it’s just about getting more money from people through speed tickets and other kind of fines.

Audi A4 Avant | Mercedes-Benz C450 T-Modell | BMW 340i Touring

Mentioning speed tickets, here the policemen are ordered to capture certain number of cash by fining road pirates. Of course they are adapted for this purpose with their cars. They just look quite ordinary and you have no chance to find out it’s police vehicle. For example recently they bought Mercedes-Benz C 450 T-Modell and BMW 340i Touring, of course without outside mounted police lights.

So they basically have camouflaged cars and they often even hide when they stationary measure the speed of cars passing by. On top of that fine range is pretty high, not even considering that Slovakia has pretty low average wage in Europe.

Police with annoying fog lights on

These mentioned above are facts. Let’s see into few interesting situations which occurred just within last month. First I met a police car in a town with rear fog lights on during weak foggy weather and mainly during night. You can imagine how annoying those lights are in these conditions.

Another interesting situation was when their car was seen in traffic covered by snow. You are not allowed to drive your car if there is snow or ice on it which could fall off during driving here. Nice example of that is the recent video on YouTube where piece of ice flew over from a car in front on a motorway hitting the windshield of another car behind. Yep, you can get 50 EUR fine by not sweeping off the snow.

And lastly the funniest moment which went viral on Slovak internet. No words are needed. Maybe only that you have to have your lights on all the time (which the driver of incoming dark car had not). Just watch the attached video.

Let me know in comments what do you think and don’t forget to share your experience with police.

I’ve already heard there are a lot of policemen in Slovakia. And I’ve also heard/seen that some of them are very arrogant and stupid. For example they stopped a Czech driver just because he overtook them and asked him to open his trunk etc. And the last video was very funny too. However, maybe it’s just a minority of them. :)

BTW I have been pulled over by police in Czech Republic only once in 2.5 years and I enjoyed it. They asked me to show everything, even spare light bulbs but I had everything all right. :D… I’ve just got a stupid ticket from a municipal police once.

Yes, they are often annoying when they pull over someone, but I have to admit lots of them are kind and even lower the fine you have to pay. My uncle has rich experience (mainly positive I think)
