I'm considering doing a 3SGE BEAMS engine for my AE86 when possible. Opinions?

The engine was used in the Toyota Altezza in Japan and they usually cost about $3000 USD for an Altezza front clip (makes it easier since everything I need should be there) and another $1000 to ship it, $600 for the mounting kit, anda whole lot of wiring XD

I want to keep it all Toyota. Otherwise I would go f20c. Besides, 3sge BEAMS are basically the modern 4age.

Yes it is, but it won’t be a street legal engine. 300 hp is legal with true mufflers and true dB.

I like the 20v 4AGE more than the 3SGE because it looks more right.

At one point I had a 3SGE equipped Toyota Curren while I was on Okinawa. It was a 3rd gen motor though, so it wasn’t BEAMS and didn’t have VVTI, and only made 170hp. It had a 4AGE sound to it and was still pretty peppy but the car was FWD, and ugly. Glad I got away from that.

3SGE BEAMS is a COMPLETELY different animal from the pleb-spec 3SGE. The 20v 4age is harder to make power on.

I’m also looking for reliability as this is going to be my college car and my daily until I can get another car, probably a Subaru Legacy GT

The 20v is definitely a good engine but it’s harder to make power on and is less reliable when tuned. The 3SGE BEAMS is what I like to think Toyota would use in a 2005ish modern AE86.

Hey! I got to sit in that AE86! The guy who owns it is a genius, super cool guy.

Just sitting in that car was a dream come true.

Here’s a pic I took that day, more below.

Awesome! Only problem is parts. most are quite expensive. The BEAMS can reach 280 hp in NA form, so that should be a riot.

LOL AE86s cost about $7000 to get up to 200 NA so I think a 3sge BEAMS with itbs, poncams, and ecu tuning should be good ;)
