I really enjoyed reading your nicely presented write up even though my experience is a bit different than yours being that your car didn’t have the all important throttle controller mod. I recently sold a 2014 Cayman S PDK with the optional paddle shifter steering wheel and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was quick enough to out accelerate the rice rocket challengers which was nice on those occasions. I sold it because the car turned me into a very aggressive driver to the point where I was taking too many chances. After several months passed I started yearning for another Cayman after test driving a bunch of alternatives. As fate would have it I ended up purchasing another 2014 Cayman but this time I chose the base model. I keep reading complaints from other drivers that the base lacks torque which I haven’t found to be the case at all. The noticeable hesitation launching and shifting through the PDK gears is easy eliminated with a quality throttle response controller. There are a number of ones to choose from but I chose one manufactured by Sprint Booster which did the trick for me. With the addition of this easy mod, the car is transformed and thoroughly satisfying to drive. I have serious doubts that most Porsche owners have the guts to drive anywhere near the limit of the base Cayman with the addition of a throttle controller. I believe most people buy the S version for bragging rights more than anything else. I wish I had purchased the base model in the beginning. The trade off is that the occasional rice rocket catches up which I’ve pretty much learned to ignore.
