From my experience there is no real difference in petrol usage between 1.0 L - 2.5 L (maybe even 3.0) engines, it’s all between 10-12 liters, when you step on around 15-16-17

325i will get better average economy.
318i if you’re doing city driving mostly. In my opinion, the difference is not enough to justify getting a 318 over a 325

In my opinion if you have to ask about fuel economy, e30 is not the car for you.

As you have been told, actually pretty much all the six-cylinder ones have similar MPGs. For a better fuel economy I would go for a 318is with an M42 engine (straight-4 DOHC) but it just doesn’t cut the sound and torque of the six-cylinder! ;)

Consider 325e, it’s M20B27 - it has only about 120HP, but has 250NM of torque on low revs, fuel consumption is greater than on 318.

My 90 325is really isnt that great on gas, about 15 mpg city, it all depends on how you drive it. Highway’s a bit better at 25. It would still recommend a 325e for you.

If you really look for good mpg, maybe the 325e is the right choice.

If you look for power, take the 325i (almost same economy as 320i) or a 318i with the M40 inline four.
