Why does the om606 engine (if im not wrong) sound as a jz or rb engine? Wouldnt a diesel engine with simillar specs sound different?

btw i freaking love mercedes benz’s om enigines!

It doesn’t really sound that much like either RB or JZ.

But it’s a turbo straight six, so obviously there will be similarities.

well, im kinda having a dream of having a massive turbo on my mercedes (its gonna be 2.4 diesel 190, and yes it has a w123 engine swap, the om616, but ill try to swap an inline 5 diesel) and throw it sideways like this on the streets, no, track!

I have a OM605 in my W202 and only thing I can say is that this Diesels are beasts. Somthing really different compared to other Diesels and I love them.

I own an OM603 turbo W124 and I’m in love with this engine, whereas I usually don’t give any credit to diesel engines… But the way these OM60x powerplants behave, sound and are bulletproof makes them desirable !

Steve the car guy

i think thats incorrect, in a video its been said that they use the om 606 (maybe they use an other engine now), and if it would be an om 617 it would sound different because its an inline 5 (link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGwiSn0Jgy8))

no he did a swap to OM606 and changed pump to manual and turbo/supercharged the hell out of it (compound setup)

6 cylinder diesels doesn’t sound as bad as 4 cyl, wich sound like tractors. Still, mercedes have much better gasoline engines than that, i see no point on using a diesel.

And probabily now the diesel lovers will try to kill me : D

Every engine sounds slightly different, but the main parameters are RPM, cylinder count and aspiration (T/SC/NA). It’s the reason why all 6 cylinder cars sound fairly similar (open a vid of a BMW inline 6 and a GM/Vauxhall V6 for comparison). It’s also why people know what a v8 ‘sounds like’, even though there’s a huge range of different ones out there! Other stuff like firing order and fuel type also factor in, but generally it’s the number of explosions per second that gives the system accoustics to amplify or filter as nessecary.
