It was the beggining of the 1980s and after 5 years of racing, Frank Williams’ team was finally showing what they were capable of with a victory in the constructors championship in 1980. However, in 1982 the team (although their driver Keke Rosberg won the drivers championship) was losing ground. Falling from a first place to a 5th in the 1982 season. They had to come up with something new and had to do it quick.

This rivalry between Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz began at the 1995 Catalunya Rally when the two teammates were ferociously fighting for the lead. The competition was so fierce that Prodrive/Subaru team director David Richards ordered the two to hold positions for the final stage of the rally because he feared that one of the drivers would be in an unnecessary crash. This order mean’t that Sainz would win and McRae would come second. McRae was a very competitive driver and simply couldn’t accept it and was absolutely furious.

It’s remarkable to think that it wasn’t so long ago that cars like the Honda Civic were considered exotic at best, at worst a downright unpatriotic purchase. Our collective attitude has most certainly moved on since the late ‘70s though, and the Civic, built in Swindon and then sold all over the world (including Honda’s native Japan), is now a key part of the UK’s automotive landscape.

The electric car is something that has been around for a long time. But they have gained popularity in the past few years when a certain few automakers decided that it would be a good idea to sell new ones. Many people will say that the electric car is the future, but trust me, there are actually some legit reasons in this rant why they aren’t.

The legendary Subaru Impreza GC8 has gone down in rally history as one of the most iconic vehicles to ever hit the dirt. Before 1993, the world was ignorant to it’s true talents and had no idea how successful this car would become. Since it’s introduction in 1993, the GC8 has undergone immense changes, modifications and challenges, as the entire world became aware of Subaru’s true potential.

Long before Sepang International Circuit came into existence in 1999, most of Malaysia’s Motorsport events took place at Batu Tiga Speedway Circuit, which was in Shah Alam - the capital city of Selangor. A Brief History Batu Tiga Speedway Circuit - also known as Shah Alam Circuit - was designed by John Hugenholtz and opened in 1968, with the first Malaysian Grand Prix won by Indonesian Hengkie Iriawan. From then, it became the venue of the Malaysian Grand Prix until 1982. The last Malaysian Grand Prix held in Shah Alam was held in 1995 for Formula Holden.

As Thunderbirds celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first broadcast, what better excuse for a look back at the wacky and wonderful vehicles from the imagination of its creator Gerry Anderson and his designers? From Tracy Island and beyond, here’s 10 of the best. 1) The Supercar CAR magazine’s LJK Setright may have popularised the term, but Anderson gave it an entire TV show. More Man of Steel than Miura, Supercar was equal parts sports car, submarine and aircraft. Now that’s a real crossover!

Proton Cars was established in the 7th of May 1983 by then-Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who first conceived the idea of a national car back in 1979. The main goal then was to further enhance the Malaysian industry - other than the obvious reason of being able to produce their own car. Actually, Proton didn’t really start producing their own cars until the Waja (or Impian in the U.K.) came along in 2000. Until then, they rebadged Mitsubishi cars and - at least - a Citroen. More on that next time.

The PS2 was my console of choice for nearly my entire childhood, and so I’m counting down my top 10 all-time favorite racing games for the greatest selling console of all time (with over 155 MILLION UNITS!). As usual, only one per franchise (though I might make some exceptions…), I haven’t played every single PS2 racing game in existence so I might miss some of your favorites and despite it being on CAR throttle, it’s not going to just include car based games, so keep that in mind. And so, on with the list! #10 - Ridge Racer V

Not long ago there was an article about kart racing and it’s perks, so I had to write a little article myself! First of all tiny introduction to karting. I race at the club level in Canada where you buy your own kart, race it, maintain it, tune it, whatever you please to do with it (within regulation if you plan to race). You can race many classes jam packed with amazingly intense racing, and those classes include single speed 4 strokes, 2 strokes, and then shifter karts.

It’s been two and a bit weeks since I bought my first car - a 1980 Toyota Celica. In that time, this 36 year old Toyota has impressed me, scared me, and (almost) left me stranded 150km from home.

Joseph Gilles Henri Villeneuve was born in Quebec, Canada, on January 18th 1950. Since a very young age he became interested in racing and anything that moved fast. Unlike many other racing drivers who started their careers on go-karts, Gilles, started in snowmobile racing.

Having seen this subject come up a few times around Carthrottle I thought it’s about time I put the truth back into the Myth of Henri Toivonen beating a bunch of Formula One cars around Estoril. Over the years this story has been subject to many Chinese whispers and confusion over the events of 1986.

South Africa is not really known for manufacturing cars, however, back in the days we had quite a few car models that were only built for the South African market. There were cars here such as the Ford Capri Piranha V8 and Ford Sierra XR8 … but I will be focusing on newer models in this post.

This is a shorter post based on a concept that was brought up in the comments in my last blog post ( https://www.carthrottle.com/post/ajv9o4g/ ), and that comments section is just a complete mess… I guess that’s the cost of having an opinion on the internet! But anyways, onto the main topic.

Fiat 500 Abarth: £5,800 First i’d like to start off with a small and fun hatchback that is easy to drive as a daily. What really is a hipster car? It is a harder question than you think. Are all brown turbo-diesel Volvo estates hipster car? Well, maybe; but how about a first gen Ford Falcon? What if it wasn’t a coupe? What if it wasn’t a V8? The line gets blurred when the car gets closer to classic car rather than a hipster-only car. However, there is one thing that’s certain. I am most definitely a hipster. And if I love a certain car that you don’t love, than the car must be a hipster car right?

When you hear word combination cheap+car you think of Volkswagen Up or Ford Ka, but after this post you’ll think of them as luxury cars. Ofcourse these cannot be found in europe or imported cause they have zero safety and in a crash passengers and the driver would be dead (except the winner), but they are the cheapest cars IN THE WORLD. CHERRY QQ - 4500 euros or 4700 dollars

In 1972 BMW showed a special car that was electric, it was meant to show that BMW is a green thinking company and that they could produce a car that didn’t polute the enviroment. They also wanted to show that an electric car could look good. It was based on the 1602 model, which originally was equipped with a 1.6 liter 84 hp engine, and weighing about a tonne, but BMW made two test prototypes with engines taken out and replaced with batteries and an electric motor.

We’ve seen some great ‘XX’ cars from Ferrari over the years. There was the FXX, which was based on the Enzo. The 599XX, which was based on the 599 and then their ‘EVO’ versions. And now what I have here is the FXX K, the latest hardcore track version of the LaFerrari. As all of them were sold before they were revealed and each costed 3 million quids, you can now have it for much much cheaper, as a remote control car, in 1:14 scale.

Forza Horizon 4! If it follows Forza’s Motorsport-Horizon-Motorsport alternating cycle it’s bound to come out in fall of 2018, and I thought I might share my opinion with you on where the next Horizon game should be set and why. My opinion is, of course, totally unbiased. Totally.

Back in 2003, Porsche has blessed us with, most likely, the pinnacle of the automobile: The Porsche Carrera GT. It had over 600 horsepower, stunning visuals and was mid-engined. Quite a recipe then, but while most super- and hypercars of the time and even today have roughly the same characteristics the Carrera GT has always managed to seperate itself from the grey mass of performance cars. What it was, that set the Carrera GT apart and why I, like many others, think that this car, at least from a petrolheads perspective, is one of the best of all time, I am trying to explain today.
