How Has A Car Saved Your Life Or Helped You Out Of A Really Rough Patch?

While looking through our YouTube archives, I stumbled across a video we shot of a man whose car helped him fight and beat cancer. So I wondered, do you have a story to share too?

Cars are special to people like us. They have character, charm and quirks. They irritate us, they lift our mood when we’re feeling low and they make us shout out in anger when something breaks.

Sometimes, however, the bond between man and machine goes far deeper. In the video you’ll have seen above, Jon Livermore’s Evo helped him combat and overcome the toughest fight people face every single day: cancer.

And so then I wondered: how has a car saved your life or helped you through a really rough patch? I’m interested to hear your stories.

My very first project car, a 2000 Chevy Blazer, literally dug me out of poverty. I spent nearly my entire savings on it ($800) with a bad heater core and some front-end body damage from hitting a deer. I spent $50 on a new heater core and $150 on some used front end parts from the junkyard, then sold that old girl for $2800. That $1800 was all I needed to get ahead of my bills and make some smart investments. I went from not knowing what, if, or when I would eat on a given day to giving my crippling poverty a big middle finger, getting my life on track, and moving up in the world. I’m still far from rich, but I’ve got a roof over my head and I don’t have to worry about money the way I used to anymore.

I’ve actually been meaning to write a blog post about that little truck, but I haven’t been able to find the time to get around to it. I still love that truck and everything it did for me.

I’ve struggled through depression a lot lately, and looking at cars makes me want to strive for something bigger than just a job at the local McDonald’s. It makes me want to be somebody, want to do something with my life. It lights a fire in my soul and feeds the flame of an uncontrollable passion that I share with fellow brethren that I collectively call Car Guys. It’s helped me so much, and I know I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t gotten into cars. Cars and my cat help me through so much. Cars mean the world to me; I don’t give a sh!t about what non-car-guys are saying about how they’re “just cars” or “just pieces of metal”. Well, no. They’re not. That’s like me calling your favorite band “just pieces of meat”. Or like calling your spouse “just a sex tool”. It’s a personal attack. Cars are like people for me. They’re better than people, because cars can’t betray you, mock you, beat you, or break up with you. They can die, like humans, but at least they won’t disappoint you like a human will. That’s why when people ask me who my favorite person is, I tell them, “I don’t have a favorite person, but I have my cat and I have cars.”
