Today's community question: What slow cars have fooled you into thinking they’re fast?
Pedigree, good looks and great marketing are very persuasive tools, something which Ferrari used to great effect when promoting the Mondial.
Pedigree, good looks and great marketing are very persuasive tools, something which Ferrari used to great effect when promoting the Mondial. Featuring styling by Pininfarina, an innovative mid-engined layout and a clever monocoque chassis, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Mondial was a proper little supercar.
Not so. With only 205bhp being produced from its 3.0-litre Tipo F106B FI V8, the Mondial had a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. In other words a current BMW 320d could beat it away from the lights.
But Ferrari isn’t the only company to pull the wool over our eyes, so we want to know: What other slow cars have fooled you into thinking that they’re fast? Let us know!

Porsche 924/944, the naturally aspirated models were incredibly slow with 110 and 150 bhp. You get to 60mph eventually.
I had a ‘80 Porsche 924 (1988-1990) and despite its reputation of being slow, I regularly did very well of the lights with the very low first gear. But its true strength was in handling. With a 51-49% weight distribution due to a transaxle and the gearbox before the axle, it handled very well. Also, being lower to the ground made it feel quick. For the two years I owned it I had a blast (and cheap to maintain with loads of parts from the VW bin).
Smart roadster a two seater with a stupidly small engine and a 10.6second 0-60 and only 80bhp
Golf R34 and Audi RS6 C5
You mean ‘R32’ ;)
because a Golf R34 doesn’t exist :P
Mazda MX-5 Miata (I tought it was fast when I was a kid)
Last generation of cellica
Peugeot 406 coupe,Mazda MX-6,Mitsubishi Eclipse,V6 Mustangs/Camaros from the 90s-00s era,
Opel Calibra,Smart Roadster
Fiero, the Pontiac version of a Ferrari
Fiero is the pour mans mr2 - Clarkson
I would say the 2010 Maserati GranCabrio or the original 2007 Maserati Granturismo.
Even a C5 Corvette reaches 60 in 4.5 secs in contrast to 5.2 seconds for the GC.
Obvious difference in weight for luxury, I guess.
