10 Cool Stats From The 2014 F1 Season

1. Most penalties: Pastor Maldonado

Unsurprisingly, Pastor Maldonado topped the table for the most penalties handed out by the FIA stewards during the 2014 season, with 10. In fairness, a few of them were due to the terrible reliability of the Lotus E22. However, half of them were still given to the Venezuelan during or after the race.

2. Most laps raced: Jenson Button

Jenson Button raced the most laps of any driver during 2014, completing 1,120 of 1,134 - nine more laps than his team-mate Kevin Magnussen.

3. Race numbers combined

2014 saw the introduction of individual race numbers, which drivers will keep throughout their F1 careers. 574 is the total of all 24 numbers added together from the latest season.

4. Most retirements: Gutierrez, Sutil, Kobayashi and Grosjean

Sauber’s woeful 2014 season is best summed up by looking at statistics for the most retirements. Esteban Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil are joined at the top of the list by Kamui Kobayashi and Romain Grosjean, with all four drivers failing to finish seven times.

5. Most wins: Lewis Hamilton

Despite winning the most races in 2014, Lewis Hamilton could have lost his second world title to a driver with over half the number of victories. Hamilton finished first 11 times, with his team-mate Nico Rosberg winning five races.

6. Least laps raced: Andre Lotterer

Andre Lotterer’s F1 career is so far one of the shortest in the sport’s history. He was drafted in to replace Kamui Kobayashi over the Belgian Grand Prix weekend but he failed to complete even one lap of Spa-Francorchamps in the race, with a reliability issue causing him to retire at the pit lane entry.

7. Most laps led

Hamilton led the most number of laps in 2014, ending the season with a tally of 495 - 12 more than Rosberg. In total, Mercedes led 978 of the 1,134 laps raced this year.

8. Ferrari fails to win

2014 was a pretty dismal year for Ferrari. In fact, it was the famous team’s first F1 season without a race victory since 1993. Fernando Alonso scored Ferrari’s best result of 2014, with second place at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

9. F1 reaches 900

The 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix proved to be a thrilling race, with Hamilton just holding off Rosberg for the victory. It was a very special round of the Formula 1 world championship, as it was the 900th race in the sport’s history.

10. Transformation at Williams

In terms of championship points, Mercedes made the biggest leap forward from 2013 to 2014. However, when looking at positions in the constructors’ standings, it was Williams that improved the most. The Grove-based squad returned to the front this year, scoring 320 points - 315 more than last season - to move from ninth to third in the championship.
