The Test Hill at Brooklands is really very steep and it levels out at the top very suddenly, too. So it makes a perfect launch ramp if you're not paying attention. The driver of this 360 Modena wasn't.

Attempting a massive jump is a fine way to send your knackered old truck out in a blaze of glory. But it's probably best to make sure that it'll go fast enough to clear the gap first. This guy clearly didn't.

The Ford F150 Raptor is one of the best off-road vehicles you can currently buy. It'll blast across just about any terrain at pretty much any speed, thanks to its incredible suspension. Suspension that's almost indestructible. Almost.

Heikkinen horror

Open jumps were always controversial in the Global Rallycross Championship. They're spectacular to watch, but not especially safe, a point Toomas Heikkinen proved at X-Games 2012. Taking off just a fraction too slow, he slams into the landing ramp, seriously injuring his legs. He made a full recovery, but open jumps were banned.

Fright flight

Petter Solberg had many lucky escapes during his World Rally Championship career, but this one on Rally Finland in 2005 is probably the luckiest. Sliding wide on a corner, he just clips a tree, removing the rear wing. Not realising, he takes a huge jump flat-out, but without the spoiler he can't control the car. Which makes for an interesting landing.

Dune disaster

Trophy Trucks are just about the strongest four-wheeled vehicles in existence. So you can only imagine how big an impact it takes to bend one in half. But somehow this guy manages just that when he seriously misjudges his take-off speed.

Beating the Wright Brothers

Portuguese racer Pedro Lamy has an odd claim to fame. During practice for the American Le Mans Series race at Mid-Ohio in 2006, he suffered brake failure which sent him off the track. Hitting a bump on the grass his Aston goes airborne and soars for 142 feet. That's 22 feet further than the Wright Brothers achieved in 1903 on the first ever powered flight.

Record breaking

For some reason Lamy's majestic backwards flight didn't set a world record. But Top Gear Stunt Man did, reversing an Austin Allegro off a massive ramp. Even though his effort was a bit crap (coming up well short of his 130 foot target) a reverse jump record didn't actually exist, so he set the benchmark. Which is cheating, really.

In 1976, stuntman Kenny Powers spent $1 million attempting the Super Jump, a mile-long jump over the St Lawrence River, from Canada into the USA. After years of meticulous preparation, Kenny fired up his rocket-powered Lincoln Continental and raced up the eight-storey high ramp at 280mph. Would he glide gracefully to the ground on the other side? What do you think?
