12 Things To Catch Up On From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action

It was an extremely busy weekend of motorsport – including Formula 1, FIA WEC, MotoGP and IndyCar – so here are 12 things for you to catch up on!

It wasn’t a classic F1 race, but fans were still treated to some fantastic overtakes and battles during the Chinese Grand Prix – including stunning overtakes by Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

The FIA World Endurance Championship kicked off in style last weekend, with a spectacular 6 Hours of Silverstone.

Despite a problem at the start and a late stop/go penalty, the No.7 Audi of Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer took the first win of the FIA WEC season, beating the No.18 Porsche by 4.6 seconds. The No.26 G-Drive Racing Ligier of Roman Rusinov, Sam Bird and Julien Canal won in LMP2.

The No.51 AF Corse Ferrari of Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander won in LMGTE Pro, with the No.98 Aston Martin Racing car of Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda winning in LMGTE Am.

4. Greaves Motorsport wins at Silverstone

The European Le Mans Series was also in action at Silverstone, with the No.41 Greaves Motorsport machine of Gary Hirsch, Bjorn Wirdheim and Jon Lancaster taking the victory in LMP2 after a close battle.

Olympic hero Sir Chris Hoy and Charlie Robertson scored the first ever LMP3 win in their Ginetta-Nissan, while the No.86 Gulf Racing UK Porsche 911 of Phil Keen, Mike Wainwright and Adam Carroll triumphed in LMGTE. The No.59 TDS Racing BMW Z4 of Dino Lunardi, Eric Dermont and Franck Perera won in the GTC category.

5. Marquez dominates at COTA

The MotoGP season resumed at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. After taking a spectacular pole position, Marc Marquez dominated the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, which was slightly delayed due to mixed weather conditions. He took the lead on lap five and eventually won by 2.3 seconds from Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi.

Qualifying for the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana was eventually cancelled due to severe weather conditions. Heavy rain meant the grid for round two of the IndyCar season was decided on entrant points.

Wet conditions remained for Sunday, but the rain eased off and enabled the IndyCar race to take place. Cautions were a common occurrence and the slippery track caused several offs.

The first ever Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana was won by James Hinchcliffe, after pulling off an unusual strategy. The race was shortened to 105 minutes, but only 31 minutes were spent racing, following six full-course cautions. Helio Castroneve and James Jakes completed the podium.

Jimmie Johnson took his fourth win in the last six races at the Texas Motor Speedway, leading 128 laps to dominate the Nascar Sprint Cup Duck Commander 500. It was his second win of the season, with Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr completing the top three.

18-year-old Erik Jones scored his first ever Nascar Xfinity Series win at the Texas Motor Speedway, leading 79 of the 200 laps and holding off Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The first 2015 Blancpain Endurance Series race saw the No.19 GRT Grasser Racing Team Lamborghini lead the field across the finish line, but the car was later excluded for a breach of regulations. The team has appealed the decision. The most dramatic moment of the race was a huge crash for Ronnie Valori in his McLaren.

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship supported the WEC at Silverstone. The popular F1 feeder series featured a packed grid of 35 drivers, with the three races being won by Felix Rosenqvist, rookie George Russell and Charles Leclerc.
