The 860 Is Another Limited-Edition Toyota GT86 With No Added Power
Last week, Toyota promised to shake up the hot hatch world with its Yaris GRMN. With a power output of 205bhp from its supercharged 1.8-litre engine, it didn’t take people long to point out that this figure is a smidge more than the GT86. Not only that, but with Toyota claiming it’ll have class-leading acceleration figures, it’ll probably be a second or so quicker to 62mph.
A jumped up Yaris that’s quicker than a rear-wheel drive sports car from the same range. That’s a bit awkward, isn’t it? You might think this newly revealed 860 Special Edition 86 provides an answer in the form of more power, but no.
It’s another one of those special edition 86s (it’s for the USA, hence the lack of ‘GT’ in the name) that’s little more than a trim fiddling exercise. But hey, even though we clamour for more power, we all know deep down the Toyobaru isn’t about that, and it does look pretty awesome in this exclusive ‘Supernova Orange’ finish with racing stripes and a black spoiler.
It’ll also be available in Halo White, with 860 cars made in each finish. All cars get black 17-inch alloy wheels, black leather trim, heated seats, a push-button starter, dual-zone climate control and a 4.2-inch display for things like a lap timer and a G-meter.
Does this orange (or white) slice of 86 sound appealing to you? It’ll be in dealerships later this month, priced at $29,155 for the manual or $29,875 for the automatic.

Well.. the gt86 is a petrolheads car. Aaand they built it accordingly. They let you built it and modify it as you need. Make it how you want it to be. If you want a already build fast car. Buy a M3 e46. The gt86 is like the AE86. A petrolheads car. And that’s everything I’m going to say.
To the people who wanted a turbocharged GT86…
how long till toyota gt86 will be cheap.
you either buy a gt86 or a used 350z
“Hi, I’d like to buy your car with the best driving experience… Okay a GT86 it will be… no, no I want to spend an extra $720 for the auto… nothing like the pure oneness with the car you get from an auto” Seriously, i wonder how many autos they sell
Thats probably the point…
That could be higher than you think because non-car guys think this thing is the fastest thing on the street, yet will be lose to a turbo civic or 90’s mustang GT.
Why do you need a G-meter in a car that is always going to read 0. Slow, cheap, POS.
like the 2017 subaru brz compertition pack, without the 5hp
Ford did the same thing with the Mustang California Special. The added stickers, emblems, and embroidery for a higher price tag. But absolutely no change to power or performance.
It’s smart because people will still go crazy for them and waste their money.
thatgearheadmarek this is a good way for companies to scam people so that they ca get more money for less. To the people who do know it’s a real pain in the ass that we can’t get better trims of cars that we love
I do kind of understand what they are doing. Mazda have been doing the exact same thing for the best part of 30 years. They are offering a reliable platform for owners to build upon. These cars are all about personalisation. Hell, can’t say for the Toyota/Subaru boxer but the older Mazda options even had a high pressure oilfeed on the side of the block just waiting to feed a turbo. The GT86 is a similar motor to the WRX so I imagine it may be the same.
I think the argument of ‘balance’ at this point is starting to not be enough to offset the lack of a turbo model :(
eeeeeeeeeeeeeehh you can take a mormal gt 86 and modify it to this one if theyre out of stock
