The 8.8-Sec 1/4-Mile Tesla Roadster Will Get Even Faster

Being able to crush any other production car on the drag strip isn't enough, apparently, as Elon Musk hints at a faster incarnation of the new Roadster, which already hits 100mph in 4.2 seconds...

Well, this is something to think about. The Tesla Roadster that was unveiled out of nowhere at the semi truck launch last week, the one that can hit 60mph in 1.9 seconds, is the base performance model. There’s potentially a faster one coming.

Why on earth you’d need something faster than a car that can already comfortably blow away the likes of the McLaren 720S and Bugatti Chiron on the drag strip, we haven’t quite worked out, yet. Because you can, maybe?

Anyway, that’s beside the point. An 8.8-second quarter-mile will have Dodge Demon owners crying over their harnesses, but still Elon Musk wants more… albeit acknowledging that a road-legal car that fast might genuinely offend the authorities.
Autocar has quoted him as saying:

“The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars. Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like driving a steam engine with a side of quiche [compared to this].

“This will be the first time that any production car has broken nine seconds in the quarter-mile. [An upgrade is] just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.”

Yep, he did just say rocket tech. We can only assume he doesn’t mean that. We can’t imagine the law would appreciate actual rockets being installed in cars…

Wow, Elon is really working up the hype to distract from his many many problems.

It’s beginning to sound like a jobless slacker living with his parents, screaming at them he’ll be a successful banker next week.. No! An astronaut!

If he pulls it off, fair play to him. But it’s beginning to look like a big smokescreen.

All his companies are highly volatile for their stockholders for this very reason. On a sidenote while Tesla is busy winning a pointless pissing contest (acceleration) other manufacturers have developed torque vectoring systems so advanced that will really make petrol cars obsolete for the sheer fact that having 1 engine per wheel and a highly intelligent system to drive them offers waaaay more grip than one engine driving 2 or 4 wheels through mechanical or electro-mechanical LSDs.

I’m fairly sure that by rocket tech he means, in association with common expression “rocket science”, technological equipment (like electronics) such as can be found in rockets. He doesn’t want to actually have rocket-type propulsion…

I doubt the roadster is happening at all, let alone a faster version. They’re already struggling with Model 3 production as it is.
