The Acura NSX with its innovative hybrid tech, twin-turbocharged 550bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine and adaptive all-wheel-drive system, is one of the most advanced supercars on the market. Unfortunately, that hasn’t stopped it from coming across as a bit, well, dull. Thankfully, for those of us not impressed with Honda’s efforts, word on the street is that a new Type-R variant could be on the way. And if it’s anything like this new NSX GT3, we’re going to be in for one hell of a treat.

Unveiled at the New York Auto Show today, the new NSX GT3 is a full on FIA specification GT3 class race car. The car is closely based on the standard road car, with some key modifications to ensure that it meets the official regulations when it goes for homologation later this year. For starters, Acura has had to ditch the standard car’s complex hybrid four-wheel drive system. Instead, the 3.5-litre, 75-degree, twin-turbo DOHC V6 will run without electrical assistance, sending its drive to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox.

The GT3 also retains the standard car’s rigid aluminium space frame and lightweight multi-material body, enabling the car to keep its clean lines. An additional deck spoiler, underbody diffuser and enlarged hood vents are new additions, giving the car significantly more downforce. Unfortunately, Acura is yet to release any information on the car’s suspension, brakes or raw performance figures, but we understand that the car is still in the development stage.

The GT3 will be undergoing further track testing throughout the year, with North American competition starting officially in 2017. We can’t wait to see it hit the track.

If you look under the rear wing it’ll say ‘’Dinka International Competition Kit.’’ I’ll let you figure out why that’s funny…
