When it comes to the new A90 Toyota Supra’s motorsport life, it seems variety is the key. We’ve already seen drift-spec A90s, a Toyota Supra stock car and a GT4 machine.

This week, another series has been added to the fifth-generation Supra’s motorsport roster - Super GT. The car to be used in the Japanese touring car series was revealed in gorgeous bare carbonfibre form, alongside the Nissan GT-R and Honda NSX it’s set to compete with from the 2020 season onwards.

Like the aforementioned Nascar version of the Supra, the Super GT is a silhouette racer, so it doesn’t have much to do with the road car beyond its outward appearance. The series shares the ‘Class One’ regulations used by the DTM, meaning there’s an extremely lightweight, circa-600bhp inline-four hiding under those carbon panels. All cars in the series are built around a carbonfibre monocoque.

The cars will all be front-engined, including Honda’s traditionally mid-engined NSX. Before Class One was adopted, the NSX-GT racing version ran in a mid-engined configuration too, with weight adjustments imposed by officials to neutralise any performance advantages.

The 2020 season begins at Okayama International Circuit on 11 April.

So a 600hp 4 cylinder is flat out amazing but most (maybe all?) of the road versions of these cars in this new DTM/Super GT combo class are available with a V6/I6. So why not let them run sixes?

Because the 4s are more fuel efficient and smaller so they can be placed better for weight distribution
