The C8 Corvette Could Get New Twin-Turbo Engines with up to 850bhp

A leaked document on a Corvette forum reportedly outlines two new twin-turbo engines for the next-generation Corvette on top of the continuing LT5 V8
The C8 Corvette Could Get New Twin-Turbo Engines with up to 850bhp

When we catch wind of an exciting ‘industry leak’ that comes from an owners’ forum, we treat it with caution. But if this one is accurate then it’s big news, especially across the pond.

A Corvette Forum user has posted a document from IHS Markit, analysing market trends in the automotive industry. It reveals that the next (and mid-engined) Corvette C8 will have two new twin-turbo V8 engine options as well as the current supercharged 6.2-litre V8.

There will reportedly be a 5.5-litre boss unit with up to 850bhp and 720lb ft of torque, plus a small-block 4.2-litre alternative with less grunt, but, let’s face it, probably still plenty.

The IHS Markit release is said to have outlined that the supercharged 6.2-litre engine would continue to be built and installed into the C8. If that’s true, we’d expect fuel economy and tax advantages to start to nudge buyers towards the new, turbocharged units as part of a gradual phasing-out process.

As we reported a year ago, the C8 will be sold alongside the flagship models of the C7 for a couple of years, with Chevrolet likely championing the former as ‘the future’ and the latter as ‘the best of what’s gone by’. The document puts the C7 on track until 2021.

It needs some refinement. You can’t just change the tail lights on a Ferarri and call it a corvette.

This shouldn’t be a Corvette. They should give it another name, whatever, but they shouldn’t call it a Corvette. A mid-engined twin-turbo Chevy isn’t a Corvette.

Front looks like a mix with a Lotus and 599 and a bit of McLaren in the sides.

It looks kinda awkward, almost like an RC car. And even though 850 sounds nice, is downsizing and turbocharging really the best option here?

Why does the corvette need to go mid engined? Why can’t it just be traditional front engined? No good reason. “But it’s faster around a track!” 1: Who cares. 2: I thought the ZR1 and Z06 were designed for that….not all corvette models should have a track bias.
