Car Of The Day: Potent Porsche 928 S4
We're lusting after Porsches in the office today, but it's not the 911 we're getting tempted by. Instead, we're looking at the 928. Originally conceived as a replacement for the 911, the 928 is a big, comfy GT that still has all the power and excitement of its sportier sibling.
Porsche bosses never quite had the stones to can the 911 in favour of the 928, but it remained in the Porka line up from 1978 up to 1995. It's much more conventional than the 911 too. The engine - a V8 - is in the front, not the back, and it's water cooler rather than air cooled like the early 911s.
Unless you've got a serious amount of cash to blow on a late GTS model, an S4 is the one to go for. Produced from 1987 to 1991, the S4 has a 5.0-litre, 32-valve V8, good for 310bhp. We're under no illusions; a 928 will never be cheap to run, but these are appreciating in value, which will ease the pain. And really, isn't owning a 928 cooler than having a 911?
This 1988 S4 we've found is up for £6995, and has an incredibly low 69,000 miles on the clock. Yes, like most 928s it does have an auto box, but don't panic, it really suits the car.
