Celebrity Waved Canadian GP Flag Early And Shortened The Race

A flag-waving mishap meant that Sunday's race in Montreal ended early, costing Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo the fastest lap of the race

Aside from a huge first-lap crash between Lance Stoll’s Williams and the Toro Rosso of Brendon Hartley (the New Zealander just can’t catch a break, can he?), there wasn’t much in the way of action at the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix. But it did end in a rather unusual way.

It actually finished before it was supposed to, with Canadian model Winnie Harlow waving the chequered flag on lap 69 rather than 70, and for the wrong driver. That meant the result - as it does in the case of a race not restarting after a red flag - went back to the last lap completed by all drivers, which was lap 68.

To be fair to the 23-year-old, it was F1’s fault, not hers - they instructed her to wave the flag at completely the wrong moment. The mishap also didn’t result in any changes of position.

However, it mean Daniel Ricciardo’s fastest lap of 1:13.839 was voided, with the best effort of the race instead going to his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen with a 1:13.864 clocked on lap 65.

Ricciardo didn’t find out until a post-race interview with Sky F1, and the look on his face was pretty priceless…

We need to stop giving celebrities these flags. Had I been there, because I almost went and bought a ticket for my first ever F1 race because Montreal is the closest track to me, until I saw the price tag for a cheap seat for $1000+, I would have complained until I got my money back. People do not pay this much money to have an event cut short by someone who has no right to hold the checkered flag.
