Classifieds' Car Of The Day: Peppy Peugeot 106 GTi

This pint-sized hero is one of Peugeot's greatest hot hatches

We finished off last week with a big, brawny Aussie muscle car for our Car Of The Day, so we're kicking this week off with something a little less thirsty: a dinky Peugeot 106 GTi.

Mention 'GTi' and 'Peugeot' in the same sentence and many people will immediately think of the legendary 205 GTi, ignoring the other great hot hatches the French manufacturer has churned out over the years. The 106 GTi definitely falls under that banner, and if anything, it's the closest thing to a proper 205 GTi successor Peugeot has ever given us.

Like the 205, it's not all that powerful, but simple and very light. Its 1.6-litre four-pot develops a modest 120bhp, which is more than enough to haul the 950kg 106 around at a respectable pace. The 0-60mph sprint is dispatched in a reasonable 8.4 seconds, and it'll top out at 128mph. It's the way it drives which is the real seller: with that low weight and none of the electronic stuff we see crammed into modern hot hatches, it's a fantastically raw and rewarding car to drive.

This 106 GTi looks like a good bet. It's up for £1995, which is at the higher end of what you'd want to pay, but it's been well looked after judging by the description and pics. It's done just 87,000 miles and the cambelt has been changed recently. Go on, pick up the phone!
