When the Ford GT configurator went live last Wednesday, we were surprised to discover that the application process was more akin to a dating website than a standard order form. Designed to separate inquisitive fanboys (i.e. us) from legitimate buyers, the detailed application asks prospective owners to outline their historical relationship with Ford, their current online presence (including social media accounts and blogs) and their enthusiasm for motor racing.

With such a taxing application process, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the number of speculative buyers would be reasonably low. Not so. We spoke to Dave Pericak, director of Ford Performance, at the opening round of the World Endurance Championship at Silverstone, who told us that “since Wednesday [13 April], we have received over 5000 applications, and we’re only building 250 cars a year.”

“A lot of people have also asked if we’re going to increase production and the answer is no. It’s important for the brand and the collectors investing in the cars that we stick to those numbers. I mean, we’re not going to get rich off this, but the car is going to help us build an awareness and an acknowledgement of our capabilities.”

Pericak also helped to clear up some speculation surrounding the unconfirmed ‘special edition’ variants of the GT; a separate sub-section on the configurator has two blank spaces for future ‘series’ cars. We initially hoped that these special editions would be performance variants - perhaps a GT ‘track pack’ - but when Pericak was asked, he stated: “I don’t think so, because the GT is pretty hardcore already.”

The first round of Ford GT applications closes on the 12th of May. You can visit the configurator here.

who the f* cares about brand capability. If the public demands it, then they should accept that their product is more popular than they thought it would be. BMW was obliged to increase the production number of the Z1 roadster when they received 5000 applications before production started.
