This Guy's Making An Aston Martin With A 3D Printer

A New Zealand man is using a 3D printer to create a 3D replica of the beautiful 1961 series II Aston Martin DB4.

Ivan Sentch is a programmer from Auckland and the man behind the project. He's printing the Aston's bodywork using a $499 Solidoodle home 3D printer, with a Nissan Skyline GTS25T as the donor car. The challenges of using a home 3D printer mean painstaking hours sanding and gluing - this is no short term project, that's for sure...

Sentch started the project in December 2012, and he's done us the courtesy of keeping a progress blog since February.

In an interview with the Solidoodle blog, Ivan admitted that his brothers think he is "mad" and that prior to the printer arriving in December, he had no previous experience with 3D printing.

He also admits that this isn't his first replica build, but the first was more of a "kit car" which meant that all he had to do was put the kit bodywork over an existing donor car - far less work in comparison to this project.

But why choose the Aston Martin DB4?

"I like old cars but most of the ones I like were just 2-seaters and, now with the kids, I just can’t use it. So I went with an old Aston Martin (2+2 seats) because they are just very, very cool, and a DB4 because I just like the look of it more … But I will be going for the GT lightweight look (no bumpers)."
