This scary crash happened last week on Tappan Zee Bridge, New York state. The accident closed the north-bound carriageway for four hours, and caused severe disruption to south-bound traffic. One of the drivers stuck in the aftermath of the carnage was taking his wife - who had gone into labour - to hospital. She had to be rescued from the traffic jam by state police.

The 61-year-old lorry driver was given a ticket for having a suspended license.

And, that’s why you don’t ride beside trucks. Had those people just been pacing that truck, right beside it, well…

Ok, I get it that the lorry driver got nailed for driving with an expired license, but where is his fault in a mechanical error case that he couldn’t have anticipated?

They could have gotten him for more than that. I live about 20 minutes from where it happened and the DOT and state laws all require those trucks to be inspected weekly or bi-weekly. Both drivers and the company owners can be held liable, receive crazy fines, and have points issued on their licenses.

Does he get rear ended after he comes to a stop or is that the axle bouncing off his car?

thats the axle. You can see it rolling by afterwards. imagine the damage on his car now.

I work close to the Tappan Zee bridge, a few of my coworkers were stuck behind the mess. Really just another reason to not hang next to trucks.
