It Looks Like Toyota Is Resurrecting The MR2 As Well As The Supra

From an enthusiast’s perspective, Toyota’s future is looking jolly exciting. We’ve already been enjoying the GT86 for the last few years, a hot Yaris is on the way, the Supra is being resurrected, and now, we’ve learned that the MR2 is set for its own automotive Lazarus moment.

Speaking to Evo at the Geneva Motor Show, Tetsuya Tada - Gazoo Racing’s boss - said that Toyota’s sports car line-up will consist of “The Three Brothers”. By that, he means the GT86, the Supra, and - the motoring world is assuming - a new MR2. We may not have to wait that long either, with Tada-san insisting Toyota wants the new trio in production “as soon as possible”.

Beyond that, everything else is speculation. A lightweight, fast, mid-engined sports car would slot between the GT86 and Supra quite nicely, but Toyota may go a different route - we’ll have to wait and see.

The third and final generation ‘W30’ MR2 was a mid-engined roadster, which went out of production in 2007, one year after the seventh and final generation Celica was killed off.

Ooooooh snaaaap! Nah, but anyways, doubt they will bring back the MR2. The AW11 and the SW20 were unique. Spyder, not my taste. Blend interior, blend exterior.. Im betting it will be the Celica.

I think the ZZ was unique, definitely ugly from the factory but unique none the less. They are very rewarding to drive and have a lot of potential. I just hope they don’t castrate it this time around with a crappy 140hp engine, when they have a performance engine that’s a direct fit.
