It Looks Like Toyota Is Resurrecting The MR2 As Well As The Supra
From an enthusiast’s perspective, Toyota’s future is looking jolly exciting. We’ve already been enjoying the GT86 for the last few years, a hot Yaris is on the way, the Supra is being resurrected, and now, we’ve learned that the MR2 is set for its own automotive Lazarus moment.
Speaking to Evo at the Geneva Motor Show, Tetsuya Tada - Gazoo Racing’s boss - said that Toyota’s sports car line-up will consist of “The Three Brothers”. By that, he means the GT86, the Supra, and - the motoring world is assuming - a new MR2. We may not have to wait that long either, with Tada-san insisting Toyota wants the new trio in production “as soon as possible”.
Beyond that, everything else is speculation. A lightweight, fast, mid-engined sports car would slot between the GT86 and Supra quite nicely, but Toyota may go a different route - we’ll have to wait and see.
The third and final generation ‘W30’ MR2 was a mid-engined roadster, which went out of production in 2007, one year after the seventh and final generation Celica was killed off.

So Toyota allied with Subaru to produce the GT86… Then they allied with BMW to produce the replacement of the Supra… So should we assume that they are going to ally with Ferrari to produce the new MR2?
Makes sense to me, the SW is called a baby Ferrari anyways, although partnering with Lotus might be a bit more economical and inline with the MR2’s heritage.
Collaboration with Subaru again would be pretty cool, mid engines flat engine, maybe flat 4 STi? Or flat 6? Would compete with the 718 too :)
F yea
No. Even if they do, it won’t be the same. Probably fat, heavier, A pillars thicker than a whale, less nimble, crammed full of stupid safety “features” and oh god no traction control. Spare me
Naaah just make a new SUV 5cm shorter that one from your range call it new name price it 10$ cheaper and people will buy it like crazy.
Snap oversteer confirmed
A new MR2 would be a win win for toyota and enthusiasts. It would probably be put into the same segment as Cayman/Boxter. It would also attract people who want to get an nsx, but don’t because of price or the nsx being a hybrid.
I don’t think they will make a new Celica, as it would be a direct rival to 86.
Qian Li intensifies
Indeed.
Que a crapload of MR2 tags
MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!!!!
