The Leaked BMW M5 Competition Seems Completely Unnecessary, But We Don't Mind

Specs and an image for the Competition version of BMW's mighty new M5 have leaked online, and we like what we see, even if the changes aren't strictly necessary
The Leaked BMW M5 Competition Seems Completely Unnecessary, But We Don't Mind

We’re totally on board with the idea of creating a ‘Competition’ version of the M2. The single-turbo N55 engine was always a little meh, so upping the aggression with the more powerful, twin-turbo S55 seems like the right call. But how about the new BMW M5? Does that need the Competition treatment?

Having driven the 592bhp all-wheel drive beast last year (which is apparently more powerful than advertised as it is), we’d have to say no. But regardless, BMW is indeed making an M5 Competition. And it’s already been leaked.

A customer citing a “contact in Munich” posted up the spec on Bimmerpost along with the image you see above, and the recipe is familiar. We have an increase of 25bhp, bringing the official figure to 617bhp and allowing for a 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds - a reduction of one tenth - a 0-124mph time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 189mph, so long as the M Driver’s Package is optioned.

The M5 doesn't need more power. But why not...

There’s a re-tuned sports exhaust (apparently it’s louder and crackles more) and lower suspension with firmer Sport and Sport+ settings for the adaptive dampers. In terms of aesthetics, it has black badging (plus a ‘Competition’ badge at the back), black trim at the front and rear, different wheels and illuminated Competition door sills.

Should the Bimmerpost’s source be correct, deliveries should commence around September. The price in Australia is $229,000 before on-the-road prices, making the Competition premium similar to what it was for the F10-generation M5.

Why should anyone care? I bet that every single performance figure here is BS. How is 3.3 seconds an improvement if the regular M5 does it in 2.8?

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Competition Pack didn’t improve performance one bit. BMW can’t be sued for it because their car still exceeds what they claim.

Is this rl

Well Mercedes has the AMG E63 and E63s even tho noone asked for the E63s, so BMW is making a competitor to that
