Manhart’s Restomod E30 M3 Has An Alpina Turbo Straight-Six

This is no ordinary E30 BMW M3. It’s a restomod from the recently established Manhart Classic Cars, which recently worked over a Lancia Delta Integrale, and it’s been dubbed the MH3 3.5 Turbo. The original 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine has been replaced with a 3.5-litre inline turbocharged six-cylinder pinched from an Alpina. Impressive in its own right, this engine once gave the Alpina BMW E12 the title for the fastest series production saloon in the world. 

Now, thanks to a modified turbocharger and intercooler, power is rated at 405bhp while the torque is at 479lb ft, compared to the standard figures of 330bhp and 369lb ft. It’s mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and Drexler differential with a 25 per cent lock and an additional cooler. If the sensation of power wasn’t enough, there’s also a Manhart exhaust system to complete the experience.

Taking inspiration from the limited Sport Evo E30 edition, the MH3 3.5 Turbo has a carbon front splitter and a rear spoiler with carbon wings. The Manhart Concave One wheels in the double-spoke layout aren’t quite as showy as a set of 1980s Alpina wheels, but that’s the concession needed to accommodate big Brembo four-piston calipers. Underneath, it sits on Manhart monotube coilover suspension by H&R.

The interior remains a little closer to the original in cardinal red leather. The driver gets a three-spoke Momo sports steering wheel and the wooden gear knob wears a Manhart logo. The engine is far more likely to overheat than the driver, so an air vent has been sacrificed for a data display so you can keep an eye on vital signs.

This extensive restomod is sure to divide purists and enthusiasts but it’s a stunningly powerful take on the E30 regardless. Pricing is yet to be announced but if E30 M3 prices are anything to go by, it’ll be sitting comfortably into six figures.
