The Mazda RX-9 Could Be A 400bhp Rotary Weapon

After sparking the rumour mill into life after the RX-Vision, Mazda has revealed plans for a new rotary legend in 2019
The Mazda RX-9 Could Be A 400bhp Rotary Weapon

After teasing the world with the RX-Vision concept earlier this year, Mazda has got the ball rolling again with plans to reveal a successor to the RX-8 at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Japanese website Holiday Auto has managed to get some inside information on the car, and the stats make for epic reading. The RX-9 could feature a 1.6-litre, twin-rotor turbocharged powertrain which should be good for at least 400bhp of rotary scream.

Those figures would make the RX-9 the most powerful production car ever produced by Mazda, but all this power will seemingly come at a cost. Estimations sit at around $80,000 (£60,500) which would make it nearly three-times the price of an RX-8. But for a return to rotary power for Mazda, I’m sure we’d be willing to pay the price!

Mazda has already trademarked the RX-9 badge, so fingers-crossed we will see a new rotary king by the end of the decade.

These renderings don’t look good compared to the RX-Vision ._.

The renders seem to suit Mazda’s current design language.I think Mazda will change it before then.

These rendered cars look very big and long, I hope it will not have this if it’s going to be produced

Not the only thing that’s big and long when it comes to this car, I’m sure.

Agreed. The new Maybach is 6 metres long. Just seems pointless. Handling would suffer immensely.

It looks big but if you take the measurements of the concept it will not so that big

Overall length x width x height: 4,389mm x 1,925mm x 1,160mm

$80,000???? I am still happy that they will produce this but i would have loved for mazda to build a rotary powered alternative to the toyota 86.

Yea exactly, and then we will just wait for depreciation to kick in so we can purchase them.

Since this is a rotary(uncommon, so the R&D cost is very high), higher cost is not surprising, but yes, a “little more expensive” alternative to 86 would have been a good idea.

I’m sure, if the rx9 will go to production, and if they see that the engine is good and reliable, cheaper version will be made.

I would… I mean the GT-R started out as a 50k vehicle. Now its a 100k supercar slayer. I think the RX-9 could be a bargain to the Supra and the GT-R.
