At the New York Auto Show Mazda unveiled a hardtop targa brother for the Miata and it’s nothing tho disappoint. Just like the Porshce 911 Targa, the Mazda MX-5 RF has a beautiful moving mechanism which retracts the roof in the trunk.
The roof can be opened or closed in 12 seconds at speeds up to 6 mph, and stows compactly like the soft top.
Other upgrades special to the RF are the Nappa leather unique to the model, so the premium could be more when pricing is released closer to the fall sale date.
In North America, the 2017 MX-5 RF will come standard with the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter I-4, which produces 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque in the soft-top variant. The Skyactiv-G 1.5-liter I-4 will be the standard engine in global markets such as Europe and Asia. Expect the MX-5 RF to come standard with a six-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic should be an option.
But how does the retractable hardtop look like when it’s working? Well… I’ll tell you how it looks… A M A Z I N G!
Are you looking forward to the Mazda MX-5 RF? What do you think about it?

Wow
That was my exact reaction when I saw that retractable hardtop working! I love cars that use the Targa like mechanism.
So cool. Looks kinda like an early Nissan Z.
That’s a plus in my book! :D
I can see that!
Flying buttress! I love when designers implement it on cars! Looks hella good!
Completely agree! The MX-5 just got a whole lot better looking :D
They didn’t need to make this. But they did anyway. Stunningly gorgeous. I hope this doesn’t add much weight.
From what I’ve read online they didn’t make any statement about the weight, but I suspect it won’t be 50-50 anymore.
This looks really nice. Mazda made a good job in the design department. Let’s hope the weight distribution is not affected to much.
In my opinion, the only drawbacks are the lack of both cupholders on the central console and glove compartment.
Also, I’d love to see a version with carbon fibre inserts on the inside. And no plastic.
I don’t know why, but I just want this mx-5 because of the hardtop
its rear has a chrysler crossfire look to it
What a beautiful car…
