Can you remember the last time Mercedes made a drop-top version of its luxurious S-Class? You probably can’t, as it was 1971, and before Mercedes actually started calling its plushest offering the ‘S-Class’. So, it’s pretty significant that Stuttgart has taken its tin-opener to its S-Class coupe, creating one of the poshest drop-tops money can buy. Oh yes, the new S-Class Cabriolet we’ve all been expecting is finally here, and it isn’t half swanky.

In the UK, buyers will be given two model options, both with socking great petrol engines. The first is the rear-drive S500, which has a 4.7-litre twin-turbo offering up 449bhp. Sounds lovely and all, but we’re more interested in the second: the S63 AMG. This has Affalterbach’s tried and tested 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, sending 577bhp to all wheels. 0-62mph takes 3.9 seconds; not bad for a four-seater convertible which tips the scales at 2110kg.

The multi-layered roof can be opened and closed in around 20 seconds at speeds of up to 37mph, and according to Mercedes, it’s the longest folding fabric hood fitted to any production car. To cut down on wind noise, the roof is coated in butyl, while the side windows are double glazed.

Want one? It’ll go on sale in the UK early next year, but - unsurprisingly - you’ll need to be reasonably loaded: the S63 coupe is already a substantial £125,605, and the Cabriolet will most likely be a little more expensive.
