Cranks but does not start? I would check if there is a spark first. If there is no spark I would check the distributor by cranking the engine to see if the rotor spins. If the rotor does not spin then it’s probably the timing belt. If it does spin then the coil in the distributor probably went bad and you would have to replace the whole thing. But there are also a lot of other sensors that could contribute to this problem so I would check the engine codes to see if there are any that need replacing before I do anything major.

So since you removed the distributor did you check your timing with a timing light? Even the slightest adjustment can throw the timing off on the engine.

I remember something simile happening to my Celica, just died in fourth, and coasted to the side of the road. Ended up spending somewhere around 500 bucks replacing the distributor, ignition coil, plugs, a head gasket, and a few other things, all to no avail. So I took it to a shop, where they found that a fuse had popped. A fuse that (with labor and replacement) cost me forty dollars. I was so pissed off
