A New Burnout Game Looks To Be On The Way

We’ve been waiting ever so patiently for the Burnout series to make a return ever since the magnificent Burnout Paradise arrived with us in 2008. Aside from a brief arcade game and a remaster for the last main series title, it seems the series was all but dead. Out of seemingly nowhere, though, a revival is rumoured to be on the cards.

Steller Entertainment may not be a familiar name to you, but the games studio was responsible for 2018’s Burnout Paradise: Remastered, 2020’s NFS: Hot Pursuit Remastered and lent a helping hand to the development of NFS Unbound. Now, it’s confirmed it’s working on a new AAA arcade racing game, and hints at a Burnout revival are not-so-subtle.

A Tweet confirming they were working on a new title came with an image captioned “POV: You’re about to be rear-ended”. Additionally, it said: “Our way of giving you (kinda weird) insider intel about what we're working on, without actually telling you what we're working on... And the bosses *still* haven't issued any take downs! Happy days!”

Read between the lines, and that reference to ‘take downs’ seems like a not-so-subtle nod to Burnout’s trademark takedown mechanic. The one that lets you absolutely obliterate your rivals, and which graced the name of Burnout 3: Takedown back in 2004.

If this turns out to be true, the new Burnout game would be the first not developed by Criterion Games, which has shifted over to developing Need For Speed titles. However, Stellar Entertainment was founded by Paul Ross, who had a 16-year stint at Criterion, so the studio’s DNA would surely still be present.

Very little else is known about the title at the moment, other than it running on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 and that it’ll be available for PC and consoles. Let’s hope DJ Atomika and Crash FM are about to hit the airwaves again…
