Now’s Your Chance To Own A WRC-Spec Subaru WRX STI Driven By The Great Colin McRae
Over the last few years we’ve seen various Subaru Imprezas that have been stanced, slammed and, let’s face it, utterly ruined by useless modifications. I’m sure people will argue “each to their own”, but the Impreza was designed with functionality at its core, built to take on the world. The STI, in our opinion, has always looked at its best when sitting on high-riding rally specification suspension, rocking fully functional aero and wearing petite gravel specification wheels - utter perfection.
This World Rally Blue 2007 WRX STI, currently up for sale on rallysales.com looks stunning with its gold powder-coated wheels and super aggressive bodywork. Driven by Norwegian racer Petter Solberg, this particular car competed in various WRC events throughout 2007, finishing second on Rally Portugal, third on the Acropolis Rally and fourth on Wales Rally GB. Adding to this Subaru’s pedigree is also the fact that the car was reportedly driven by the late great Colin McRae on his very last public appearance at the 2007 Goodwood Festival Of Speed, just months before his untimely death.
Since 2007, the the car has been given a major overhaul. Nothing has been left untouched, and after a bare-shell rebuild, it’s now back to showroom condition. Collectors will be disappointed that the original day-glow yellow graphics have been removed, but we love the untouched appearance of this box-fresh rally weapon. The interior has also been given the once over with new seats, harnesses and fire extinguishers.
The only gripe we have is that the car looks like it has undergone a right-hand drive conversion. You can’t help but feel that this particular modification has the effect of detracting from the vehicle’s originality, and even on a basic level, if you’re buying an ex McRae car, you want to sit where the great driver once sat.
Under the skin, the car has also been completely overhauled. The engine has been given a refresh, the gearbox has been rebuilt, and the exotic Reiger Racing suspension has been fully stripped and checked. The car also comes with new hubs, uprights and brake discs. The work inside and out indicates that this is a high quality build, but if you’re interested in purchasing an old race car, we would always advise taking a specialist with you to inspect the vehicle before buying.
If you want to own this piece of motoring history, you’ll have to make your way to Northern Ireland to collect it. Oh, and you’ll also have to find £159,500. Not cheap, but it’s a collectors piece that you can daily, which in our eyes makes it a completely rational purchase…

On the subject of stanced imprezas, while I’m not a fan, I don’t really agree with the statement “the impreza was built to take on the world”. Let’s not forget that the impreza begun as a fwd econobox comparable to an escort, pretty much like the lancer. Rally is what made it famous as an all-terrain machine. Buying a WRX STI and stancing it, that’s something I don’t get.
You’ve completely missed the point of the impreza, of course its an econobox and have always been, but a very special econobox. Not many econoboxes were initially designed with boxer engines and AWD. Its always been a go anywhere car.

If you want to use a WRC Impreza as a daily, just buy one that McRae hasn’t driven. It’s much cheaper!
If I bought a Subaru I would do exactly this to it. And daily it.
It’d almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a real S12 than try to build one! And good luck using a world car as a daily!
