A Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion Just Sold At Auction For Nearly £5 Million
As homologation specials go, the 911 GT1 is right up there with the Ford RS200 and Peugeot 205 T16 for fetching huge sums of money in today’s market. How huge are we talking? Well, this one was just auctioned for £4.62 million.
Going under the hammer at Gooding & Company’s auction at Amelia Island, chassis number 005 had just under 5000 miles on the odometer and came with a seemingly rare set of workshop manuals, sales brochure, bespoke tools and other tantilising accessories.
Homologated to allow the 911 GT1 to race at Le Mans from 1996-1998, the Straßenversion (street version) uses the same 3.2-litre twin turbocharged flat-six as the racecar. This means 536bhp and 443lb ft of torque.
These are fairly forgettable numbers by today’s standards but the road-legal GT1 was still capable of 60mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 192mph due to a light curbweight of just 1120kg.
Breaking all previous records in terms of price for a GT1, this specimen climbs well above the original pricing of £745,000 back in the 90s.

I was only 4.62 million dollars off, if only I had more time.
Actually, it sold for 5.66 million dollars. Unless you have 1 million dollars already.
More interesting is the fact that it sold well below it’s pre-sale estimate

WHAT!!!!
5 million pounds…
Because it will be worth double that in 20 years. ;)
Fun fact: the homologation requirements were 25 production cars, but Porsche only built 22. Just two of which had the early 993 front end.
GT1 homogation was hilariously lax anyway. Toyota only built one road legal TS020 GT-One, and somehow convinced the stewards the fuel tank counted as the mandatory luggage space…

I remember seeing a red one for US sale in a print ad back in 1999. Seller wanted just under $1m then. Quite the appreciation!
