This Is The Porsche 911 R: A GT3 RS With Less Aero And A Manual 'Box
Still upset about the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS having no manual gearbox option? Here’s your antidote. And what an antidote it is.
It’s called the 911 R, and although it’s something we’ve been expecting thanks to a bunch of rumours and spy shots, we weren’t supposed to see it until the Geneva motor show - which kicks off tomorrow. Thanks to some (low res) leaked images and details, we’re getting our first look a little early.
It’s best thought of as a 911 GT3 RS without the shouty aero bits, which means it has the same 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated flat-six mounted up back. The key change is something you’ll see in the interior snap above: yep, unlike the PDK-only GT3 RS, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the car’s 493bhp output while stirring through the gears yourself via a manual ‘box. Lovely.
Details are still very limited at this stage, but there has been talk before about the 911 R coming with narrower tyres than the GT3 RS, a further sign that this one’s more about enjoyment than ultimate lap times. We do hope those decals are optional, though.
Given the choice, what would you have: an R or a GT3 RS?

gt3 rs just because of the wing
I wonder if this news will affect the stratospheric values of the old 997 4.0 RS.
The want is seriously strong with this one.
INB4 they charge more for the “purist” version that has fewer features than the standard version.
Why not just add the optional gearbox?
they heard all porsche purists cry-out loud for the lack of the 3pedal option…porsche gave a shift for those who dont give a sh!t about the tenth of seconds slower acceleration
Bumper had me like
This car doesn’t make sense to me
