At the very least the clicking noise is a good measure of how far to pull it.. When I was younger I was taught to adjust the handbrake so that it held the car after 3 clicks

Anybody who has seen the mechanism that keeps an e brake up knows it makes no difference

Worrying about the parking brake ratchet is like worrying about the ratchet wearing out in your socket wrench.

The hand brake lever in my 1979 Ford Escort is the one part I never touched when I rebuilt the car and it has always worked fine.

A few years back I had a Vectra, it was the C body. I received a letter from Vauxhall advising that there had been some cases where the lock on the hand brake had not engaged in the ratchet mechanism because of people pressing the button when using the handbrake. A few weeks later it happened to me. From that day forward I have never pressed the button when pulling the hand brake on, this way the lock always engages with the teeth on the ratchet.
