Think You Own The Ultimate Sleeper? Look Away Now...
Sleeper cars (aka Q cars in Britain) are big news for us lot. While it's great to speed away from your fellow motorist at the lights in your sporty Porsche Cayman, that fleeting victory warmth fades quickly. Unless, however, you've beaten your opponent in a sleeper, a car which possess about as much street credit as a 'lady of the night.'
We usually associate sleepers with cars such as the Volkwagen Passat 3.2 4MOTION, Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 and third-gen Mercury Marauder. They're understated family buses, but boy, do they pack a punch.
If we're all agreed that these cars are indeed great sleepers, what category would we pigeon hole this Viper-engined 1930s Rolls-Royce? Hyper-sleeper? Maybe super-sleeper? Yeh, we'll go with that last one...
This retro-mod Roller super-sleeper is powered by an 8.3-litre V10 2004-spec Viper engine, which produces 500bhp and a colossal 535lb ft of torque.
Of course, strapping such a monstrous engine to a 1930s classic would be like feeding a newborn with Nandos extra hot chicken - tempting, but you know you'll get yourself in a whole world of trouble. That's why Viper Specialty Performance have built a new-tech chassis and drivetrain onto which an original 1930 Roller body is draped. The car - now 99 per cent completed - even features original wire wheels, air-conditioning and a manual gearbox, the latter of which was the owners preference.
Looking at this Viper Club Of America forum thread, this super-sleeper is no hot-rod, rather a highway cruiser and show car.
Whatever it is, we're mighty happy it exists!
