Tom’s Toyota Supra ‘Restomod’ Pays Tribute To A Legend

Legendary race team and tuning firm Tom’s has revealed a modified A80 Supra which gives a nod to the TRD 3000GT
Tom’s Toyota Supra ‘Restomod’ Pays Tribute To A Legend

For all the incredible restomods in recent years, most firms are focusing on European legends like the BMW M3, various Porsche 911s and the odd Lancia Delta. Perhaps surprisingly, the market for restored and modernised JDM cars is yet to take off. Still, one legendary racing team has taken it upon themselves to have a crack with an A80 Toyota Supra and pay tribute to a very special version from the ‘90s.

It must be said, ‘restomod’ may be a stretch for what essentially is a modified Supra rather than a ground-up reworking but who are we to argue with the firm behind it, Tom’s? As a racing team, Tom’s has long been responsible for many of Toyota’s factory efforts in SuperGT (and JGTC before it, including those Castrol-liveried cars) as well as Super Formula.

Funding those efforts is its tuning arm, naturally focusing heavily on modifying Toyotas. Its self-described ‘restomod’ of the A80 is fitted with a bodykit replicating that of the TRD 3000GT, a special-edition version of the Supra built by Toyota Racing Development and revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon exactly 20 years before this new Tom’s effort.

Like the original car, there’s a vented bonnet perhaps best recognised as appearing on the Supra from The Fast and Furious, along with aggressive bumpers, enlarged side skirts and a huge rear wing.

Mind you, with its flat, Porsche Viper Green-like paint finish it’s much more eye-catching than the original silver car. Giving that a little more pop is a set of 19-inch Potenza alloy wheels with a set of Brembo brakes hiding behind them.

Tom’s hasn’t directly confirmed, though rumours indicate this show car retains a stock 2JZ, with the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six with the original claimed 276bhp figure, albeit underrated for the Japanese Gentleman’s Agreement.

You’ll be able to have your Supra converted by Tom’s to this show spec, with prices starting at 25,000,000 yen (approx. £135,000). If you throw a few extra pennies on top of that, we’re sure the tuner would be happy to provide a bit more power, too.
