Toyota Supra Rumour Mill Latest Suggests A BMW Engine With Hybrid Power
With the name recently trademarked, it’s looking increasingly likely that Toyota’s end of a joint sports car venture with BMW will indeed be called the Supra. Naturally, that news sent JDM loving car fans into complete and utter meltdown, but now we’ve had a little time to ruddy well calm down, let’s take a look at what else we can expect.
According to an (admittedly pretty speculative) report in Auto Express, we’re looking at an engine from BMW powering the rear wheels, with Toyota-developed motors powering the fronts via a lithium ion battery. The cells will be fed with juicy regenerative braking, motorsport-style. Also in a Toyota first, the car will also get a dual-clutch gearbox, rather than the firm’s infuriating CVT ‘box.
Interestingly, the report also claims the Toyota sports car will be longer than the BMW Z4 successor, sitting on an elongated version of the same jointly-developed platform. The exterior designs will apparently be completely different too; we’re still hoping that the Supra looks something like the gorgeous FT-1 concept (pictured).
Sick of all the rumours and want Toyota just to reveal the damn thing? You’ll have to be patient: for both the BMW and the Toyota, we’re looking at early 2017.

the r35 is also dual clutch
the nsx is also hybrid
I AINT EVEN MAD
If you want a proper Supra you’ll have to buy a used one
Am i the only one that hates that most sports cars are going hybrid, like whatever happened to a good old fashioned front engine rwd sports car
Unpopular opinion, i think the old supra is kind of ugly
Slow news day. We’ve known this for ages
If anyone knows how to make engines, it’s BMW.
Bmw and Toyota team up makes me think that Bmw might help toyota build a new engine maybe a new inline 6 for the potential new Supra because of all the recent bmw cars have inline 6s
It doesn’t look like a supra so I don’t care about the engine…

What part of a supra is not made by bmw, or hybrid, is confusing to people?
What genius thought a hybrid would be a good idea?
