Unsurprisingly, The McLaren 720S Is Way More Powerful Than Advertised

This dyno run of a 720S by DragTimes as good as confirms what we've all been expecting

We’ve seen enough hypercar-baiting runs from the McLaren 720S now to know that the official 720hp (710bhp) power figure is probably a tad conservative. Lo and behold, turns out the 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 is indeed more potent than that.

Brooks from DragTimes was curious enough to put this 720S on the dyno, yielding 691hp to the wheels. Factor in drivetrain losses, and you’re looking at somewhere in the region of 770hp at the crank.

Rolling road results can of course vary from facility to facility, and there are always atmospheric conditions to bear in mind, but regardless, this is a clear sign that the 720S is much more powerful than Woking has been letting on.

Bring on the drag races…

In a way its smart, i mean look at the r33 gtr, that was discovered to have more power than advertised and has gained some rep for it, also its better to have understated the power than overstated it

Still not as powerful as a Dodge Demon…

Not really a good comparison. The demon only does one thing: go fast in a straight line. This can go fast in a straight line, but with demon levels of HP, it wouldnt handle or turn as well as it can

…Hmm, will the 720S be the Corvette/GT-R of the more powerful supercars? (Not saying the ‘Vette isn’t powerful!)

Still, advertising less horsepower is better than advertising more horses

You bet it’s a marketing stunt as well ‘hey let’s actually put more horses in our car than we say it has that way it’ll get guaranteed media coverage about that and that will make us look like good guys’ (not saying that they aren’t, they just have salesman smarts in top of that ;))

This isn’t the first time McLaren has underestimated power figures, when someone dyno’d a 570S, it made about 530 at the wheels, so it should be called the McLaren 580S (factored with 10%)

doesnt the 720 mean metric horsepower also, giving the car around ‘only’ 705ish bhp?

It means something else, forgot the name.

For those who didn’t watch the video:
It makes about 770hp at the engine
They measured 710hp at the wheel
