US Audis Will Soon Have Integrated Toll Payment Tech

Toll roads in the US, Canada and Mexico are about to get a whole lot easier for Audi drivers, with a few models set to be fitted with integrated toll payment system.

The latest vehicle-to-infrastructure tech will arrive on higher-end cars first, most likely as an optional extra. An Integrated Toll Module (ITM) is built in to the rear-view mirror, from where the transponder can communicate with toll gates outside the car.

It means that there’s one less thing for thieves to try to steal from the car, but by getting rid of the usual third-party transponder it helps clear the windscreen of clutter and those rubber suckers that leave nasty circles on your glass.

The ITM system is said to be compatible with all tolling agencies across the US. It should also work in Canada and Mexico, but Audi doesn’t seem to be willing to guarantee it in those countries. Drivers using it after the roll-out later this year will be able to link it to their existing tolling account – or straight to their bank account.

This is fantastic and all, but how will you control the verification by the “Toll”
Thieves could easily sway the system and siphon your funds.

This developing tech dystopia scares me

The same way you do in Croatia, you put funds into the device than device uses them, the device doesn’t have your credit card info.

You buy funds at the store for real money

My problem with it is in my area there’s one with a switch that allows you to use the special toll roads for free if you have a carpool. And I’m pretty sure that’s not going to have that.

Dude, you’ve got the downvote problem again. Whoever this mysterious hater is, he/she really ought to come forward.

Italian toll booths allow drivers to pass straight through them if they’ve got a special pass thing (don’t know the exact details, but I noticed this while on holiday there).
I reckon promoting that sort of thing worldwide would be much more cost effective than car makers having to develop complicated tech. Just my thoughts.

Plus they don’t have to stop- they can keep driving the same speed as per usual.

North Carolina has something similar, but with cameras that take pictures of your car going along and sends the bill to you via the mail.

The US has that, called the EZPass. Audi is just looking for another option to inflate the price for people who don’t want something stuck on the windshield of their expensive car.

We may as well just make it more convenient and unavoidable to pay taxes.

Driving on CNG was a thing years ago. Now Audi have “integrated” it in their G-Tron cars.
ElectronicTollPayment is a normal thing in Eastern Europe (in the Balkan countries like Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia) now they “integrate” it in their cars as an option that probably costs 500£ when you can buy the bloody ETP Device yourself and set it up for 50£… But at least they spare you from having to do it yourself 😂😂😂

They are not going to charge $1000 for this device. My I-Pass transponder costs only $30. How can Audi expect people to pay $1000 for devices that do the same job as a $30 one.

In Italy we got this from years. It’s called Telepass and it’s a device that you put on your car windshield by putting a stripe of velcro and it let’s you to pass through pay tolls without stopping, you don’t even have to slow down too much. It’s very practical and not too expensive in fact it’s very popular.
